Breast Self examination(BSE) is very important for women of all ages. It’s a good idea to self-examine your breasts the same time each month. You should do this your breasts tend to change along with your menstrual cycle each month. There are two components to BSE: How your breasts look, and how they feel.
STAND IN FRONT OF A MIRROR WITH YOUR BRA AND SHIRT OFF, MAKE SURE YOUR ARMS ARE DOWN BY YOUR SIDE. LOOK TO SEE IF YOUR NIPPLES HAVE CHANGED COLOR, OR IF YOU HAVE ANY STRANGE DIMPLES.
PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HIPS AND FORM CHEST MUSCLES. THEN LEAN OVER LOOKING FOR, ONCE AGAIN, ANY STRANGE DIMPLES.
LIFT YOUR ARMS UP OVER YOUR HEAD. MAKE SURE YOUR BREASTS FALL PROPERLY. TURN LEFT AND RIGHT, OBSERVE ANY BUMPS ON THE TOP, OR SIDES OF YOUR BREASTS.
LIE FLAT ON YOUR BACK, PLACING A PILLOW UNDER ONE SHOULDER. IF YOU ARE STARTING WITH YOUR RIGHT BREAST FIRST, LIFT YOUR RIGHT ARM UNDER YOUR HEAD, AND USE YOUR LEFT HAND FOR EXAMINING.
USING YOUR THE TIPS OF YOUR POINTER FINGER, MIDDLE FINGER, AND RING FINGER, MASSAGE IN CIRCULAR MOTIONS FROM THE INSIDE OF YOUR ARM PIT TO THE CENTER OF YOUR CHEST.
BE SURE TO USE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PRESSURE; LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, TO FEEL BENEATH EVERY LAYER OF SKIN. FEEL FOR SMALL AND LARGE BUMPS THAT EITHER HURT, OR FEEL ABNORMAL. (OTHER SIDE)
ONCE YOU ARE DONE, MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DOCTOR IF YOU HAVE OBSERVED ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR BREASTS. YOU NEED TO LET YOUR DOCTOR KNOW IMMEDIATELY.
